Tinnitus therapy (MBCT) update No. 2    Watch this thread for updates Watch this thread for updates

Hi all. I attended my second Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy session (MBCT) - which is the current tinnitus therapy offered by The Royal ENT Hospital (NHS) on Grays Inn Road. Details of my first update can be found here:

The second MBCT session was six weeks after the first.

Session details: 45 minute one-to-one session with hearing therapist at hospital on Swinton Street. Unhurried session. Reviewed my current meditation and mindfulness regime. I am now doing 20 minutes meditation when waking and 20 minutes before bed. Using free mindfulness meditation podcasts available from iTunes to support my sessions.

Outcomes: For me, this therapy is proving very positive. MBCT combined with 75mg Amitriptyline for sleeping, has more-or-less helped me get to the point where my tinnitus is no longer significant in my day-to-day life. To be clear, my tinnitus has not reduced in volume. I have simply stopped 'reacting' to it and therefore my brain mostly ignores it. In both the morning and evening meditation sessions I have to focus on my tinnitus, try and place where it is coming from, what "colour" it is today, how it's different from yesterday. Trying to do this for 40 minutes a day is so boring and it's incredibly difficult to keep your focus on it so it's no surprise that this is helping my habituation.

In addition, mindfulness and meditation has halted my compulsive skin biting and has improved my overall mood considerably.

I have postponed my next sessions and will attend again in 3 months as I don't feel I need any additional support in the meantime.

To be aware: I had already started to habituate prior to starting MBCT I am someone who is pre-disposed to "mind-body-spirit" therapies and so I am most likely to see the most positive angle my timeline is in no way typical. my therapist had indicated that i should expect timelines similar to standard TRT (1 - 2 years), I figure I have just been lucky.
